I think we should risk a question that could give us a narrower range,
such as: Is the box located within a town beginning with the
letter "W"?
A yes narrows the field by 60%, but a no gives only marginally more
choices than the safer 50/50 question. Or slightly more risky, if the
town starts with "S".
I'll decide my question later today, but am curious along what lines
of questions others are thinking...

You took the words right out of my mouth! I think that's a good question.

In thinking ahead, here's where we are. 31 towns left. Using the 50%
theory, that would give us
Q13: narrows it to 15 (we'll call it 16 to make an easier split)
Q 14: down to 8
Q 15: down to 4
Q 16 down to 2
Q 17 down to specific town
Q 18, 19, and 20 to figure out which stone wall, and where.
Now, anyone who's spent time on trials in New England knows that 300yr old
stone walls live EVERYWHERE. So we still have some work to do. :-)
The S / W suggestion is excellent and I like the reasoning behind it.
Also, the mention of cemetaries and their stone walls is a VERY valid point.

I am trying to play from afar and it's getting tough. My first thought
for "two flat rocks" was a cemetery, btw.
I just finished putting in push pins at google earth for all the
communities left. My first thought is ... is it located within the "ring"
around Boston? I think there are fewer towns inside than outside, so I
thought that might be a good question, or perhaps, asking, "does the town
name contain the words ... west, bury, port, rock, borough, ham, etc...
you get the picture .. eliminate the names of towns containing similar
parts.
I'll be asking after dinner tonight.

Two flat rocks seems to have been updated to 3 flat rocks. I have the map
of the counties printed out, and as a town gets ruled out, I color it with
yellow high-lighter (damn the scientist in me!!!! Can't stop organizing
data in some fashion or another! AHHHH!!!!).
I simply sent a list of town names..is the box located in blah blah blah. I
had 20 towns in my list. :-)
I also thanked Ephemeral for the really cool game, I'm having fun playing!

Am having fun following this and after giving this much, actually too much
thought two towns stand out..ROCKport or STONEham.
Could it be that obvious?
I am not doing this scientifically at all but am enjoying all the places I am
finding in Ma this way.

I don't believe there is any undefined areas in MA. The entire state is
defined by a city or town. Each County is completely covered by cities
and towns also.
I am leaning towards asking if it is in Essex County. Like you said, it
divides the numbers in half again.

It has been a while since we got a "yes" answer. However, back on Q9 it was
confirmed to be in "Essex, Middlesex or Worcester Counties". Then Q10 ruled
out Worcester County. There is no place in Essex or Middlesex County that is
not part of a city or town.
But I would feel better if we got a yes for out next answer.

Unless the Yes answer is to the exact town, well then, the no
answers are working just as well as yes answers at this point.
Also, as a MA native, I have never seen a place in MA that is not
defined by a town/city. We even pride ourselves on our unique town
signage! ;)
Combination questions are working pretty well, as in combining "Is
it in Essex county, or in "x" town"? BTW that was not my idea but I
like it. Of course, if we get a "yes" answer then that would not be
as beneficial as "no"....
